The "Trial" Ferrer : A Clerical-Judicial Murder
New York: New York Labor News Company, 1911. First edition. Disbound saddle-staple binding, octavo (4-7/8 x 7-1/4 inches) in illustrated blue wraps, [1], 45, [46: ads] pp.
Editorial pamphlet of de Angulo's (1887-1950) review of Madrid psychology professor, L. Simarro's (1851-1921) two-volume work on "The Trial of Ferrer and European Public Opinion", originally published 22 January 1911 in the Socialist Labor Party newspaper, New York Daily People, edited by Daniel De Leon (1852-1914).
The Anarchist educator, Francisco Ferrer (1859-1909), who was raised in Parisian exile at the end of the 19th century committed himself to return to Spain with his adopted libertarian pedagogy in studying Paul Robin's Prévost orphanage school coupled with research into Anarchist principles.
When he returned to Spain in 1901, he founded the Barcelona Modern School---the namesake for an educational movement which spread to Italy, Switzerland, Branzil, UK, and New York, where Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman were part of an Anarchist coalition that rallied around his teachings in the wake of Ferrer's execution in 1909.
His trial proceedings were decried as a sham on the basis that the charges of fomenting an insurrection in Barcelona improbable for a single man of his directives, hardly warranting an execution that would inevitably have him remembered as a martyr for Anarchist ideals.
De Angulo, at the time of publication was studying Linguistics at Johns Hopkins as well as an active member of the Baltimore branch Socialist Labor Party. He was equal parts mystic, shaman, scholar and linguist, remembered in the beat literature of Kerouac, Snyder, and Ginsberg for his knowledge of the American west and indigenous peoples. In his later years his tutelage in American Indian cultures was sought after by young poets Robert Duncan and Jack Spicer who remembered him for his work, Indian Tales.
This is the first edition of de Angulo's first book, which provides a thorough synopsis of Ferrer's arrest, trial, execution, and background. Good condition, wraps tape-repaired to interior spine which has oxidation marks from staples, some chipping and short closed tears to spine ends and text block edges, toned wraps creased along spine with moderate wear all around, a couple short closed tears to edges and minor soiling, contents clean.
