The Psalms of Struggle and Liberation
New York: Herder and Herder, 1971. Signature-bound [octavo] in pictorial wrappers. 76 pp. Scarce copy of Cardenal's first book published in the English language. Ernesto Cardenal, one of the major Latin American writers of the 20th century, was an artist, poet, and priest. Highly active in the Sandinistan revolution, his political faith remained a guiding light throughout his life and work until his death in 2020.
The Psalms of Struggle and Liberation (originally title: Salmos) is Cardenal's rewriting of David's biblical psalms, updated to reflect the injustices and inequities of his present day.
With previous ownership inscription of Robert Marquez, editor of Caliban and translator, publisher, and scholar of Afro-Caribbean literature. Very Good, with wraps lightly curling to corners, mild shelf and edge wear. Item #1707
