After two months imprisonment, Ma Liuming was released to critical celebrity in the Chinese art world and was subsequently invited to their first show outside of China at the 1996 Tokyo International Performance Art Festival. Ma Liuming challenged inherited censorship in cultural presentation, mainly in how the human body is portrayed in art with most of their work with self-depiction of their nude form in different landscapes held in high esteem in Chinese history. They also would paint their face atop the bodies of infants. Ma Liuming continues to do painting, photography and performance art.
