On the cover: François Truffaut shooting "Jules et Jim" Softcover quarto, perfect bound in illustrated paper wrappers, 93 pp. Co-founder of Anthology Film Archives and The Film-Makers' Cooperative in New York City, Film Culture magazine was the print arm for the godfather of Avant-garde cinema, Jonas Mekas. The magazine ran for 80 issues from 1954 until 1996. This issue, #24, features a dedication essay "To Maya Deren" by Rudolf Arnheim; "Fourth Independent Film Award" presented to Stan Brakhage for his films The Dead and Prelude; "Notes on the New American Cinema" by Jonas Mekas; "The Deep Frozen Eye of God (Notes Towards a Social Surrealist Manifesto)" by Richard Preston; "Cinematic and Literary Stylistic Figures" by Pier Paolo Pasolini; "Making a Film is My Way of Life" by Michelangelo Antonioni; interviews with Antonioni and Buñuel; caricatures by Gretchen Weinberg; more. Very good, wear and rubbing to ends of spine exposing leaves, similar wear and rubbing to perimeter aspects of wrappers, small closed tear at tail of cover at binding, light soiling to wrappers.
